DATA SCIENTIST / ML ENGINEER

Unbox is building the toolkit to power the social commerce revolution. We’re helping merchants and creators supercharge their growth on platforms like TikTok Shop, leveraging the power of shoppable content to drive sales with a new generation of consumers. Our solutions will help merchants and creators across the social commerce lifecycle, leveraging machine learning, automation and continuous optimisation to unlock sustainable, profitable growth in a market forecast to reach $6tn by 2030.

Founded by two former TikTok execs, we’ve taken on investment from some fantastic backers with experience spanning tech, ecommerce, media, social and AI. Since launching, we’ve established design partnerships with top tier global merchants as we build our initial solution set, and are looking for a talented, motivated Head of Engineering to join our growing team.

About the role

We’re seeking a highly skilled and motivated contract Machine Learning Engineer to work with us on refining our MVP. The ideal candidate will apply their strong analytical skills and experience of applied machine learning to the development of our MVP. You will work with the CTO and Co-founders to plan, deliver and iterate on feature modelling and data science that delivers actionable insights to our customers.

What you’ll be doing

  • Work with our customers’ data to explore how to create unique insights, and collaborate with the co-founders and CTO to define how we best deliver customer value

  • Work alongside the co-founders to craft a story based on these insights that can be shared with customers to support their growth in social commerce

  • As we gain confidence in customer needs, automating the analysis process using ML models, with the ultimate goal of productisation

  • Fetching and extracting data, producing derived data using cloud APIs (from video) and automating when it makes sense

What we’re looking for

  • Proven data science experience with the ability to manipulate and analyse data efficiently, particularly the ability to experiment with different data and models iteratively to solve business needs

  • Strong problem-solving, communication (including the ability to explain progress to non-technical colleagues), and collaboration abilities

  • Experience synthesising and communicating insights derived from complex datasets to external stakeholders

  • Experience working in an early stage startup (or similar) and an ability to be self-managing in a high-uncertainty environment

  • Proficiency in Python and SQL

  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (Pytorch, HuggingFace) and libraries (like scikit-learn)

  • Experience with text, video and audio analysis

  • Data manipulation including fetching data from APIs, comfortable using cloud APIs to manipulate data

Nice-to-haves

Experience of techniques used to extract features from video and audio (e.g. object detection, sentiment analysis)

  • A deep understanding of Natural Language Processing (particularly applied to transcribed audio)

  • Experience fine tuning LLMs for production use cases

  • Proficiency in data modelling for data warehouses, specifically in a machine learning context
